Hand in Hand (charity no. 1069976)

Hand in Hand has been assisting a rural community to provide primary education for around 800 children. Kiraracha is a remote village in the foot hills of mount Kilimanjaro.

In 2003 members of Kiraracha Village began fundraising to build a school for their children following the Tanzanian Governments decision to give free primary school education to children providing suitable premises existed from which they could be taught.

By 2004 this remote, subsistence community had raised enough to begin building work at the site to construct the two classrooms and office block required before the Government supplied teachers.

In late 2004, Hand in Hand began working in partnership with Unicom Electronics (Based in Dar Es Salaam) to supply unwanted mobile phones from the UK which could be refurbished and retailed locally to benefit the Tanzanian economy.

By 2006 enough mobile phones had been collected in the uk for refurbishment and sale  in Tanzania to fund the construction of 4 more classrooms. A further 2 classroom were added in late 2007 from the receipt of grants. Future plans include the provision of 9 more classrooms in order to meet government standards for education. These will be funded through the collection of mobile phones, trust grants and individual gifts.
